Background
The NACPB Certified Payroll program was developed by a Certified Public Accounting (CPA) firm to educate and certify the firm's payroll personnel to assist the firm's degreed accountants and CPAs in performing public payroll services. Over the past 10 years, the Certified Payroll program has been used by hundreds of public bookkeeping, accounting, and payroll firms to educate and certify payroll personnel.

Objective
The primary objective of the Program is to help payroll personnel develop the knowledge and skills to accurately and productively perform payroll processing and payroll tax form.

The second objective is to enable Certified Payroll Specialist (CPS) candidates to pass the Uniform CPS Examination in order to become a licensed CPS.

Requirements
The Program includes an educational component comprised of the NACPB Payroll Tax Guide. This Guide is for payroll processors and payroll tax return preparers who want to learn or enhance their knowledge of payroll processing and payroll tx return preparation and serves as the educational foundation for our Uniform CPS Examination. The Guide can also be used as reference tool for payroll personnel.

To earn the NACPB Certified Payroll certification, individuals must complete the following steps:

  1. Study the NACPB Payroll Tax Guide.
  2. Request access to the Uniform CPS Examination.
  3. Successfully complete and pass the Exam.

Individuals who meet these requirements receive our NACPB Certified Payroll certification.

Uniform CPS Examination
The online, Uniform CPS Examination is used to test the NACPB Certified Payroll or Certified Payroll Specialist (CPS) candidate's payroll, payroll processing, and payroll tax return competency. The exam consists of 80 multiple choice questions. As you complete the self-study Guide you may request access to the exam via email or telephone. You must request access to the Exam during NACPB business hours, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm MT. You have 24 hours to take and submit the exam for grading and the exam is "open-book". You must receive an 80% in order to pass the exam. Test results are made available to you within 24 hours. If necessary, you must wait one full week to retake the exam.
